Especially interesting signature of Queen Maud of Norway, youngest daughter of England\'s King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra, addressed to General Dighton Probyn, a member of her parents\' Court circle, the comptroller of her parents\' households and finances, a dear friend of her immediate family, and a particularly close confidante of Queen Alexandra until his death. Other than other members of royal families, there was hardly a person closer to Maud and her family.
Offered is a piece of paper cut from a larger paper, on which Maud has written: General Probyn from Louise & Maud. Maud has taken the liberty of also signing for her sister Louise, Princess Royal and Duchess of Fife. No idea of date, except General Probyn died in 1924.
Included is a vintage (circa 1910) postcard of Queen Maud and her only child, Crown Prince Olav, the future King Olav V of Norway. Post card is in excellent condition, with a lovely sheen and crisp corners. Both signature sheet and autograph have been archivally mounted in a black matte.
Queen Maud and her husband, Haakon VII, were the founding members of today\'s Norwegian royal family. As the daughter of Edward VII and Alexandra, and the granddaughter of Queen Victoria and King Christian IX, Maud was closely related to nearly every Protestant royal house in Europe at the start of the 20th century. Maud married her first cousin, Carl, a younger son of King Frederick VIII. They were destined for a quiet, comfortable life. Then, in 1905, Carl was offered the throne of Norway, which had only seceded from a union with Sweden.
As children of the king of England and the king of Denmark, it would be hard to find a better choice for the Norwegian throne. Maud\'s first cousins included the German Kaiser, Queen Sophie of Greece, Empress Alexandra of Russia, Queen Marie of Roumania, Crown Princess Margaret of Sweden, and Queen Ena of Spain. Carl\'s aunts and uncles included Queen Alexandra of England, King George I of Greece, and the Empress Marie Federovna of Russia. Whew! When Norway searched for a new royal family, they couldn\'t have settled on stronger candidates!FREE s&h via Media Mail to continental US address.
