QUEEN MAUD OF NORWAY – ROYAL TELEGRAM – 29 NOVEMBER 1917 – KRISTIANIA – TO LORD FARQUHAR – WW1 PRIORITY MESSAGE – GREAT NORTHERN TELEGRAPH COMPANY
A scarce First World War royal telegram sent by Queen Maud of Norway (Maud of Wales, daughter of Edward VII) from Kristiania (Oslo) on 29 November 1917, addressed to Lord Horace Farquhar, one of the closest associates of Edward VII and Queen Alexandra. Sent via the Great Northern Telegraph Company, marked PRIORITY, with full routing metadata.
The message conveys Maud’s personal thanks and warm concern for Lady Farquhar’s health, signed in the standard telegraphic form “MAUD”. Royal telegrams are rarely manuscript‑signed; this printed tickertape format is the correct and desirable form for urgent royal communications of the period.
Dated during the height of WW1, when Norway’s neutrality was under severe pressure and Maud maintained close ties with the British royal family. Royal telegrams from Maud are not common, and wartime examples to high‑level British courtiers are particularly sought after.
