Up for sale is a beautifully carved, genuine antique Chinese hardwood figure depicting a smiling young Daoist acolyte or folk deity. The figure features a large, traditional woven-style hat slung across his back and is dressed in flowing robes adorned with incredibly detailed, flush-set silver wire inlay. The inlay forms elegant, auspicious cloud motifs (xiangyun) and floral roundels carried across the front, sides, and reverse of the robe and hat.
The piece is carved from a dense, heavy hardwood — likely longan wood — and features an unpolished, rustic base showing authentic, historic hand-tool adze marks on the bottom, consistent with age and hand construction.
Condition Report (Sold As-Is)
This is a 100+ year-old piece with honest wear and characteristic age. Please review all high-resolution photos carefully:
Silver Inlay: Excellent, stable condition. The fine wire remains tight and flush with the wood surface, with no major lifting or missing sections.
Attribute: The figure's hand features a bored-out socket where a separate, slide-in accessory (such as a staff, fly-whisk, or lotus stem) was originally held. This original handheld attribute is missing.
Eyes: Features an inlaid eye insert; the figure's left eye (viewer's right) is missing or degraded, while the right eye (viewer's left) retains its original dark inset.
