Antique Bickmore Gall Cure Tin – Early 1900s Veterinary / Horse & Cattle Collectible
Offered is an antique Bickmore Gall Cure metal tin manufactured by The Bickmore Company of Old Town, Maine, an early American veterinary product created for treating galls, wounds and sores on horses and cattle.
This highly collectible early Bickmore tin features the company\'s iconic working horse trademark and the slogan:
“BE SURE AND WORK THE HORSE”
The original paper label includes extensive period advertising and directions for use, along with Bickmore\'s international agency information for locations including Montreal, Paris, Melbourne, London and Berlin.
The label identifies this as the Medium Size, with a period price of Fifty Cents. It also advertises smaller 2-ounce packages for 25 cents and larger 16-ounce packages for $1.00.
The tin is an especially interesting example of early American veterinary advertising and packaging, representing the era when Bickmore was expanding its horse-care products Connection: Bickmore\'s Gall products are significant enough to be represented in the collections of the Smithsonian\'s National Museum of American History. The Smithsonian catalogs Bickmore Gall Salve as a veterinary product/veterinary medicine made by the Bickmore Company in Old Town, Maine, and also holds a related Bickmore Gall Salve product specifically identified for horses and cattle. This provides institutional confirmation of the historical importance of Bickmore\'s veterinary products and makes this early Bickmore Gall Cure tin an especially interesting piece of American veterinary and agricultural history.
Condition: Antique condition with substantial age-related wear. The tin has considerable surface oxidation, discoloration, spotting, label wear, fading, scuffing and areas of loss consistent with its age. The paper label remains remarkably detailed despite the wear. The metal bottom also shows age-related corrosion and surface wear.
The tin appears to have been opened at some point, although its original contents and/or exact amount remaining have not been verified. The listed 7.4 oz is the current total weight of the item, not a stated net contents weight.
