A1 page 1836 letter datelined \"Bremen, 7th of Octbr. 1836\" addressed to \"Mr. P. A. Oliver, Master of the Ship Tiber, Care of Mr. H. Garrels, Bremerhaven\" and postmarked with a two-line straight-line in black \"BREMEN 6 OCT.\"
Content: \"By this I beg leave to inform you that I engaged a Cabin Passenger for you at the rate of Eighty Bremen Dollars in case you could take this Gentleman besides you compliment of 121 Betweendecks passengers. Of course You would have to find him board yourself. The watercasks and provisions will be sent down tomorrow and Monday and I intend to send down the passengers on Tuesday which you will consent and for the rest refer to my last respects from Yesterday, expecting your answer. I expect Your reflection by the return and am respectfully, Charles Taub.
Capt.Paul Ambrose Oliver (Sr.) was born in Philadelphia on April 18, 1796, and diedat Fort Hamilton, Long Island, New York in June 1848 and was interred inGreenwood Cemetery. He was the eldest sonof Capt. Thomas and Sarah Ambrose Oliver.On July 28, 1819, he married Mary Van Dusen, the daughter of a shipbuilder in Kensington, Connecticut. He wastrained on board ship and was first mate of the \"Nancy and Kate,” hisfather’s ship. He was washed overboardin 1812 at age 16. He was commissioned aMaster in the U.S. Navy on Apr. 15,1814, having served in the Navy, especiallyat the battle of Lake Erie in 1812, commanding a vessel that took prisoners. In 1819, he was recorded as shipmaster andresided in Philadelphia. He owned and commanded the ships \"Tiber,\"\"Superior,\" \"Trenton,” and \"Louisiana\"--vessels asnotable in his day as Cunard Liners later were. His children were George Washington, born June15,1820, who resided in New Orleans being active in the cotton trade; MarySeymour, born May 15, 1823; Paulina Ambrosina, born Aug.26, 1828; Paul AmbroseOliver (Jr.), born July 18, 1830 on board the ship Louisiana in the EnglishChannel under the U.S. flag, was educated in Altona, Germany, came toNew York and engaged in the shipping business.
