Hiding in the bushes since 1891.

Take a good look. A girl peeking out of a gooseberry branch, red berries tangled in her hair, green leaves all around her, a soft wash of sky behind. \"Gooseberry.\" printed neat at the bottom like a calling card. A commercial color lithograph from the 1891 Allen & Ginter Fruits set, N12, the kind of little masterpiece that came tucked in a box of cigarettes. PSA graded her a 4. VG-EX. A little wear, all of it earned.

One packed in each box of cigarettes.
Says so right on the back.
Allen & Ginter of Richmond, Virginia, slipped a work of art in with the smokes.

Fifty fruits on the checklist.
Gooseberry\'s name comes first.
Cherries made the list too. We checked.

Lithographed in Philadelphia by George S. Harris & Sons.
Printed in 1891, before the Wright brothers ever left the ground.
Smaller than a playing card. Prettier than most paintings.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art keeps a Gooseberry in its collection.
Now you can keep one in yours.
