Offered here is an authentic autograph letter signed (ALS) by Daniel S. Dickinson (1800–1866), United States Senator from New York (1844–1851), dated Binghamton, October 15, 1845.
In this brief handwritten note, Dickinson instructs:
> “Please put enclosed safe to my credit. Yours truly, D. S. Dickinson.”
The letter is addressed to R. J. Withum, Esq., likely a Binghamton attorney or banker, whose docketed signature also appears at the bottom of the sheet.
Dickinson was a leading Democratic politician of his era, serving as New York Attorney General, U.S. Senator, and later U.S. District Attorney for Southern New York under President Lincoln. A staunch Union supporter, he was even considered for the Vice Presidency in 1864.
Date: October 15, 1845
Format: 1 page, ALS in ink
Condition: Expected folds, minor foxing, edge toning, and small spots. Ink remains bold and clear.
This is a fine example of Dickinson’s autograph from his early Senate years, suitable for collectors of 19th-century American politics, Civil War–era figures, and New York history.
