From 5 through 9 February 1945, the second battalion attacked violently and captured olzheim in the face of extremely difficult terrain, fanatical enemy resistance and devastating artillery fire. In this exemplary accomplishment, the battalion advanced 11000 yd smashing 6000 yd through the SIEGFRIED line. Neutralized many pillboxes and bunkers. And captured 366 enemy prisoners, the brilliant tactical planning, rapid capture of assigned objectives and the conspicuous gallantry of each member of the second battalion 345th Infantry regiment 87th infantry division are in keeping with the highest traditions of the Military service, and this was general orders 246 headquarters, 87 infantry division 19 July 1945. As approved by the commanding general United States armed forces European theater. That's pretty impressive !"
Trowern was wounded in the head, the bullet entered the crown of his helmet, entering the front while grazing his head and exiting the back of the helmet., at the battle of Olzheim. He shows the helmet and wears it on his head during the interview.He was also wounded in the leg by artillery shrapnel at the battle of the bulge.
