Vintage Tokyo Japan Postcard Masashige Kusunoki Statue Imperial Palace

Take a trip to the Imperial Palace in Tokyo with this fantastic pre war postcard featuring the impressive equestrian statue of samurai Masashige Kusunoki. You can see a crowd of locals gathered around the base wearing a great mix of traditional kimonos and western style hats which perfectly captures Japan during that transitional cultural era. The bronze statue itself looks incredibly commanding as it stands guard outside the palace grounds.

This card is unposted and has a mostly clean back but the front definitely shows some battle scars. There is a very prominent vertical scratch or surface crease running right through the blue sky on the left side of the image. You will also notice typical corner rounding and general edge wear from its long journey across the Pacific.

Masashige Kusunoki was a legendary fourteenth century samurai who is basically the ultimate historical symbol of absolute loyalty in Japan. He famously fought for Emperor Go Daigo and willingly rode into a battle he knew he was going to lose just to prove his ultimate devotion to the throne. His massive bronze statue was placed right outside the Imperial Palace in 1900 to remind everyone passing by exactly what extreme dedication looks like.
