Beautiful vintage Japanese Sōsaku / Creative Kokeshi doll by award-winning artist Sadao Kishi (岸貞男).
This striking hand-turned wooden kokeshi depicts an elegant woman beneath an oversized sculptural hat, decorated with dramatic hand-painted blue and white Japanese ocean waves. Small red painted accents complete the minimalist mid-century Japanese design.
Approximately 8½–9 inches tall including base.
Includes the original Japanese presentation/storage box with paper labels and award markings. The box identifies this as a Creative Kokeshi by Sadao Kishi and references the All-Japan Kokeshi Competition / Prime Minister’s Award. The work’s title appears to begin with the character 高 and may read 高波 / Takanami (“High Wave”), although part of the original label is obscured by old tape.
Sadao Kishi (1932–1998) was an important Gunma Prefecture creative-kokeshi artist whose works received numerous awards, including the Prime Minister’s Award.
Condition: Very good vintage condition with light age-related surface wear. Original box shows age, discoloration, tape and storage wear. Please review all photographs closely as they are part of the description.
A wonderful example of postwar Japanese folk art and mid-century Sōsaku Kokeshi design—especially desirable with its original labeled box.
