Vintage Japanese Silk Uchikake Wedding Kimono Embroidered Goshoguruma Floral For Sale

Spectacular vintage Japanese uchikake bridal kimono,lavishly embroidered over lustrous white silk satin with brilliant red and pinkflowers, green foliage, and large metallic gold and silver goshoguruma courtcarriages.

The goshoguruma, or imperial court carriage, is atraditional Japanese decorative motif associated with the elegance andrefinement of the Heian court. Here the carriages are repeated dramaticallyacross the garment among masses of chrysanthemum-like flowers, creating anexceptionally rich design from every angle.

The decoration is embroidered rather than simplyprinted, including extensive satin-stitch floral work and densely workedmetallic gold, silver and bronze-toned threads. The close-up photographs showthe impressive variety of embroidery textures and the workmanship of thecarriage wheels, architectural details and long curling shafts.

The white exterior makes a striking contrast with thevivid scarlet-red interior. Like traditional uchikake, the garment has apadded, trailing hem that gives it its characteristic formal silhouette.Uchikake were worn as elaborate outer robes for Japanese bridal ceremonies andreceptions and were designed to be worn open rather than belted with an obi.

Likely mid-20th century, approximately Showa era.

Measurements: Sleeve tip to sleeve tip 51”; sleeve drop 39”,flat across the back 24”, length down the center back 66”. This is heavy andweighs over 5 lbs.
Condition: Very good vintage condition overall,especially considering the light-colored silk. The extensive embroidery remainsremarkably bright and intact. There are scattered areas of light agediscoloration/spotting and a small area of wear/damage to the white silk, allphotographed closely. Please examine the condition photographs. The flaws donot detract significantly from the spectacular overall presentation.
