Vintage Cranberry Opalescent Coin Dot Swirl Salt Pepper Shakers Art Glass Pair For Sale

A charming pair of vintage cranberry opalescent art glass salt and pepper shakers in the Coin Dot (also called Coinspot or Polka Dot) pattern with a swirled, ribbed body. Each shaker has a milky white opalescent ground with rows of transparent cranberry pink dots that glow when held to the light. Each stands roughly 3 1/2 inches tall and is fitted with a screw-on metal top.

Condition: used, very good. The metal tops show expected wear, including age darkening, and the tops are not identical. One is a gray aluminum-type metal and the other is brass-tone with green verdigris in and around the holes. There is some light chipping on the glass at the rim just below the tops. Please study all photos, which show both bases and the tops from above, as they are part of the description.

Cranberry opalescent glass was a favorite of American glasshouses from the Victorian era through the mid-20th century. The pink color comes from a small amount of gold added to the glass, and the white opalescence is created by reheating the cooled glass so the edges of the pattern turn milky. The dots and swirl were pressed into the mold. These shakers are unmarked and are offered as vintage cranberry opalescent glass in the coin dot tradition of American glasshouses such as Fenton, Northwood and Hobbs, without a confirmed maker.

A lovely addition to an opalescent glass collection, a Victorian or cottage style table, or a cranberry glass display. Ships carefully packed.
