Vintage Challenge Straight Razor (Bridgeport, CT) & Challenge Barber Hone – Professionally Prepared & Shave‑Ready – From My Personal CollectionThis listing is for a matched vintage shaving set from Challenge Cutlery Co., Bridgeport, Connecticut — a professionally prepared straight razor paired with an original Challenge barber hone. Sets like this rarely appear together, especially in this condition.
This set comes directly from my personal collection. I currently own over 50 collected straight razors and more than 25 barber hones and 15 Shapton, Naniwa and Suehiro whetstones, and I only sell pieces that meet my standards for performance, condition, and historical value. I have owned, handled or dressed over 200 barber hones over 20 years of collecting and refurbishing them for personal use. I have researched makers, sellers, importers and hone behaviors from the late 1800's through to the early 1950's. All my research will be available in my upcoming book: The Barber Hone Compendium, on sale soon. My former name was: BarberHoneKing due to the sheer volume of Barber Hones I was trading in. I took a break from selling razors and hones for a few years, but now I'm selling my collection one collector piece at a time.

It comes with the original razor box that is also in incredible condition for its age.
Insert: I hone razors to a standard where there is no question about their suitability — not “almost shave ready,” but truly ready for the face.
🪨 The Hone
Model: Original Challenge Barber Hone - Based on all known Challenge Cutlery Co. catalog references (1900s–1930s), this hone appears to have been sold as part of a complete shaving kit that included the razor, brush, bowl, and hone. I have not found any catalog evidence showing it being offered individually.
These kits were marketed both to home users in the primary Challenge Cutlery catalogue and to barbers in the Challenge Barber Supply catalogue. No surviving documentation identifies the actual manufacturer of the hone, and the stamped Challenge mark is consistent with a seller’s imprint rather than a maker’s mark.
This information comes from my long‑term research into barber hones, including catalog studies and hands‑on examination of over 200 stones. Additional details will be included in my upcoming reference work, The Barber Hone Compendium.
Condition: Excellent vintage condition
Surface: Pristine, flat, no glaze
Edges: Lightly chamfered
Wear: Only a tiny edge chip on the stamped side (purely cosmetic)
Flatness: Verified on a precision plate
Lapping: Lightly lapped only enough to expose fresh abrasive while preserving originality
Testing: Hone has been razor‑tested to ensure it is safe and effective
Use: Ideal for maintaining the razor’s edge for years to come
Insert: This hone is part of my personal collection and has been thoroughly cleaned, evaluated, and tested to ensure it is razor‑safe — not just a display piece.
