VINTAGE HANDMADE BRIAR PIPE – SELECTED BY ANTHONY IRVING – HOUSE OF PIPES, BRAMBER

Selling a very unusual vintage handmade briar tobacco pipe bearing the distinctive \"SELECTED BY ANTHONY IRVING\" stamping, accompanied by an original period promotional leaflet for Anthony Irving\'s famous House of Pipes in Bramber, Sussex, England.

The pipe is stamped:

and additionally:

MADE BY HAND

The pipe features a beautiful honey-brown smooth briar finish with attractive natural grain, a substantial bent bowl and a long black stem.

The stamping makes this an especially interesting piece of pipe-collecting history.

Anthony Irving was the founder and curator of the famous House of Pipes in Bramber, Sussex, an extraordinary exhibition devoted to the history of pipes, smoking and tobacco culture.

The House of Pipes opened to the public in 1973 and ultimately became an internationally known collection containing tens of thousands of objects from around the world. The collection remained open until 1989, after which much of it was dispersed through Phillips.

The historical importance of Irving\'s collection is well documented, and objects from the former House of Pipes collection are now represented in specialist museum collections.

The pipe is in very good vintage condition overall.
