Offered is a striking pair of vintage elongated bronze (or brass alloy) African-style tribal figures — a taller male and a shorter female — standing on square bases. These highly stylized, attenuated sculptures evoke the elongated forms associated with both traditional West African art (such as Dogon-inspired ancestor figures) and mid-century modernist works influenced by African sculpture (often compared to Alberto Giacometti).
Details:
• Taller figure (male): Approximately 16 inches tall. Bald, elongated head and neck with abstracted facial features. Open, looped arms framing the torso. The body features distinctive incised geometric decoration: cross-hatching (diamond lattice) on the upper torso transitioning into chevron/zigzag patterns lower down. Long, thin legs ending in detailed feet on a square base.
• Shorter figure (female): Proportionally smaller. Features a more defined face with textured hair or headdress, rounded shoulders, and arms held in front of the body (hands positioned near the midsection). Lower body shows vertical striations suggesting a skirt or wrapped form. Also stands on a matching square base with detailed feet.
• Both have a warm bronze/brass tone with natural dark patina, surface texture from the casting process, and some areas of lighter wear or verdigris (green oxidation) consistent with age. Bases are hollow underneath; one retains remnants of an old paper label/sticker.
• Material: Cast bronze or brass alloy (solid-feeling with good weight for their slender form).
• Style: Mid-to-late 20th century decorative African tribal / modernist elongated figurative sculptures. Excellent for mid-century modern, African art collections, or as statement decorative pieces.
Condition:
Good overall vintage condition. Expected surface wear, patina variations, minor scuffs, and some green oxidation spots (especially near bases). No major breaks or repairs visible. Feet and bases are intact and stable. Please review all photos carefully — they form part of the description.
Dimensions:
• Taller figure: 16” high
• Shorter figure: roughly proportional (approximately 10–11” high based on photos; exact measurement available on request)
• Bases: small square platforms
These make a dramatic pair displayed together or can stand alone. Perfect accent pieces for a shelf, console, or collection of ethnographic/modernist sculpture.
Ships carefully packed. Feel free to ask any questions or request additional photos/measurements.
