OverviewA tall, slender vintage Balinese carving in bovine bone, showing a crowned goddess rising from a demon and flames. She holds a lotus bud up to her shoulder, with downcast eyes, a tiered crown, beaded jewelry and armbands, and long hair carved down her back. Her body follows the natural curve of the bone in a gentle S-shape. At the base, a fanged demon face with bulging eyes reaches up from carved flames. The bone has a warm cream tone with light shading in the cuts. It is fixed to a small dark wood stand and suits a shelf, mantel or curio cabinet.
BackgroundBali is known for fine carving in bone and wood, and tall, elongated figures like this were made for local and visitor markets through the later 20th century. Pairing a calm goddess with a fierce demon is a common theme in Balinese art. This piece is unsigned and unmarked. The carving rests on a rectangular foot that is glued to the wood stand.
ConditionGood vintage condition with no breaks or repairs seen along the thin middle section. There is light toning and minor surface wear, and the wood stand has small scuffs. Please see all photos.
Dimensions & WeightThe carving is 12.0 x 1.5 x 1.0 inches (H x W x D). With the stand it weighs about 9.0 oz.
