For your consideration is a remarkably rare, large-scale post-modern statement piece: an oversized 31-inch cast aluminum sculptural flower vase designed by renowned artist Cec LePage. Commissioned by the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in 1998 for a limited-edition industrial metal exhibition, this architectural object stands out significantly from her signature translucent lucite work. Due to its massive scale, very few of these 31-inch floor/grand centerpiece variants were produced, making it a highly sought-after piece for collectors of late-90s studio art and brutalist/minimalist design.
Design & Craftsmanship
Crafted by pouring molten aluminum into handmade molds, each piece in this series was individually hand-finished and hand-polished. This artisanal process leaves a beautifully subtle texture on the metal, ensuring that no two examples are exactly identical. It features a bold, heavily beveled geometric silhouette with a striking rectangular cutout through the center.
Versatility
While engineered to stand vertically as a soaring floor vase, its robust construction and dramatic geometry allow it to be styled horizontally as a low-slung, industrial minimalist coffee table centerpiece or architectural tray.
Condition
• Overall: Very good vintage condition with an attractive, authentic patina. Displays minor, light surface scuffs consistent with its age and handled nature, which only enhance its industrial character.
• Note on Insert: The small, removable glass vial insert originally designed to hold water inside the center cutout is missing. It functions flawlessly as a standalone sculptural art object, or a custom glass/acrylic liner can easily be sourced if you intend to display live floral arrangements.
