Great vintage postcard!
ITEM DESCRIPTION:
- Type: Vintage mid-century monochrome black-and-white photo-offset matte printed lithograph advertising postcard on standard paper stock.
- Publisher & Photographer: Published commercially by National Press, Inc. of North Chicago, Illinois, bearing their sharp vertical center divider attribution text line on the reverse face.
- Subject Matter:
- A striking mid-century roadside perspective view titled along the lower margin: \"Dreamland Motel - U.S. Highways 10-52 - Valley City, North Dakota.\" The layout showcases the flat-roofed, modern L-shaped motel complex architecture, highlighted by a prominent commercial road sign in the center. The driveway courtyard features an active playground swing set on the left, an early 1940s split-window coupe car, a secondary mid-century sedan, and a large classic sedan parked near a motel unit door with travelers actively unloading luggage from its large open rear trunk. The lower borders are anchored by classic American Travel Association (ATA) and AAA logo insignias.
- Postal History: Divided back configuration carrying a rose-pink 2-cent Thomas Jefferson US postage stamp. Postmarked via a machine wavy line hub cancellation stamp from Jamestown, North Dakota on July 7, 1956 (Jamestown N. Dak. Jul 7 1956). Carries a complete handwritten ink correspondence message detailing cross-country driving conditions through rainstorms, noting that they are staying at this specific motel apartment for the night, and mapping out a morning departure schedule, addressed to a Mrs. H. J. Theis of Minneapolis, Minnesota.
- Historical Interest: Outstanding primary source document recording mid-century automobile tourism, highway hospitality design, and family road trip transit history through the Great Plains along the old National Parks Highway route before the Interstate system bypasses took hold.
CONDITION:
Postally used with a clear 1956 North Dakota machine transit postmark stamp. Displays authentic vintage character with very light uniform corner tip rubbing, straight factory-cut edges, excellent clarity across the black-and-white photographic print field, and a clean reverse backing face displaying light natural age-related paper toning.
