18TH CENTURY
SPANISH ICON"CHRIST AFTER THE CRUCIFIXION"
DIMENSIONS: APPROX 13-1/2" BY 11"
This work is in amazing condition for its age and has been preserved by the
arid climate of the southwestern region. The canvas is still intact and pigmentation
is still quite visible and is mute testimony to the skills of these talented
18th century artisans and their pigments. According to the tales associated with this icon it had been brought over
by a Spaniard to New Spain (Mexico & parts of South America)
And handed down to many successive generations who cared very well for it.This icon depicts Jesus after the crucifixion. This is a particularly interesting icon
because it appears Mary is actually assisting Jesus and Jesus is not merely
appearing to her. This icon hints at Jesus being taken down from the cross
by Mary and her assisting a still suffering Jesus. The background even hints
at a hill behind them from which they are descending - the hill of Golgotha. This is an extremely rare depiction of this favorite subject of old icons. Excellent condition for this 18th century canvas! The colors have faded
with the centuries to some extent, but the gilding is still amazingly bright.
The canvas has had the rear label glued to it (apparently someone wanted to
make sure whomever obtained it in the future knew its age) Wood has some
worm holes and marks where previously it had been hung.
This work will make a wonderful addition to your prized collection.Icon - ic Art For Your Exquisite Interiors text, images and descriptions Copyright GALLERY 20TH. 2027. All Rights Reserved.
