📌 DESCRIPTION
This oversized USS John Finn (DDG-113) Chief’s Mess challenge coin combines ship identity, Navy Chief symbolism, and the extraordinary legacy of the destroyer’s namesake in one highly detailed custom-shaped design. Measuring approximately 3 x 2.75 inches, the coin has substantial visual presence, with an elaborate skull-and-feathered-headdress silhouette rather than a conventional round format.
The obverse displays a skull beneath a large feathered headdress with extensive white enamel, antiqued metal detailing, red accents, and a prominent USN fouled-anchor Chief insignia positioned on the headband. Deep relief, individual feather shapes, cut-through openings, and contrasting metal tones give the design considerable depth from different viewing angles.
The reverse identifies the coin directly as “USS JOHN FINN CHIEF’S MESS.” Three raised Navy fouled-anchor devices represent the Chief Petty Officer, Senior Chief Petty Officer, and Master Chief Petty Officer grades, while the Hawaiian Islands and decorated ribbon imagery strengthen the historical story. USS John Finn was named for Chief Aviation Ordnanceman John William Finn, whose actions during the December 7, 1941 attack on Naval Air Station Kaneohe Bay earned him the Medal of Honor. The destroyer was commissioned at Pearl Harbor in 2017, creating a particularly meaningful connection between the ship, its namesake, Hawaii, and the Navy Chief community.
