USS Cummings DD-44 Cassin-Class Destroyer Side View c1915 RPPC – Waterman PhotoThis is an original c1915 real photo postcard of the USS Cummings (DD-44), a Cassin class destroyer active during the years of World War I. The photograph shows the ship underway at speed, with all four funnels smoking and the bow cutting through moderate seas. The composition is strong and dynamic, offering a clear view of the hull, forward guns, bridge structure, and the distinctive four stack profile of early American destroyers.
The lower left corner carries a photographer’s imprint beginning with “Waterman,” consistent with several known naval photographers whose work appears on early 20th century RPPCs. The reverse features the AZO stamp box with four triangles pointing upward, dating the postcard stock to the 1910–1918 period, fully aligned with Cummings’ early service.USS Cummings (DD-44) was a Cassin-class destroyer built for the United States Navy. Laid down in 1913 and commissioned in 1915, she primarily served during World War I, where she operated in the Atlantic escorting convoys and conducting anti-submarine patrols. After the war, Cummings remained in service during the interwar period, serving with both the Asiatic Fleet and later the Pacific Fleet. By the late 1930s, she was stationed at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Although present during the Japanese attack on December 7, 1941, she suffered only minor damage. She continued to serve in various support roles throughout World War II before being decommissioned in 1945 and sold for scrap in 1946.
USS Cummings served in Atlantic patrol and convoy escort roles during World War I, part of the early generation of U.S. destroyers that helped define American naval operations in the pre dreadnought and early dreadnought eras. This photograph captures the ship in motion, offering a detailed and visually appealing view of a four stack destroyer at sea.
