$100.00

A 5.5x3.5" vintage RPPC photo postcard from the estate of a vintage automobile postcard collector. This was part of a huge collection of antique postcards.

Photo Overview

A group of well-dressed gentlemen in derby hats, bowlers, and suits pose in and around an early brass-era touring automobile parked on a dirt street in front of a wood-frame building with a covered porch. The pencil notation on the reverse identifies the car as a Thomas - the famous Thomas Flyer marque built in Detroit - and dates the image to 1908. The large open touring car shows the classic brass-era details of the period: prominent brass headlamps and side lamps mounted low on the front, a tall right-hand drive steering wheel, wood-spoke wheels, and a long hood. Several men hold glasses, suggesting a celebratory gathering or club outing.

This real photo postcard captures the earliest days of the American automobile, when owning a powerful touring car was a mark of prosperity and adventure. The setting appears to be a hotel or roadhouse, a common destination for early motoring clubs. A young worker stands to the right near a bicycle, providing a contrast between the old and new modes of transport.

Historical Notes

1908 was a landmark year for the Thomas marque. The E.R. Thomas Motor Company Thomas Flyer stunned the world by winning the epic New York to Paris Race - a roughly 22,000 mile contest across America, the Pacific, Japan, Siberia, and Europe. Driven by George Schuster, the Thomas Flyer beat rivals from Germany, France, and Italy to become an instant national sensation and a symbol of American engineering. That victory made \'Thomas\' a household name in 1908, precisely the year this photograph was taken, and helps explain the pride evident in these gentlemen posing with their machine. Despite the racing triumph, the company could not sustain its early success and financial troubles led to its collapse by 1913, making surviving Thomas cars and period images of them highly prized among brass-era collectors today.

Print analysis

This is a genuine real photo postcard (RPPC) printed on AZO stock, identified by the AZO stamp box with four triangles pointing up in all four corners, a diagnostic used from roughly 1904 to 1918. The image is a true silver gelatin photographic print, not a halftone - no dot pattern is present under magnification. This is a Type 1 original photograph produced at the time the image was made, consistent with the 1908 date noted on the back.
