ABOUT THIS SANTA
Painting a whole town at night around the oval base is the hard part. Church spires rise over steep snowy gables, every small window glows pale yellow, and snowflakes drift across a deep blue sky. Each elf wears a different folk pattern, from green chevron bands to a blue diamond lattice. The open sack is carved with wrapped parcels, ribbons and candy canes. The painting alone takes the artist several days. You can set him on a mantel, a sideboard or an entryway table, and he draws the eye from across the room. Santa and his helpers, a Christmas centerpiece with plenty to find up close.
