The Meaning of the Saint Matthew Icon

Saint Matthew is one of the Twelve Apostles and is honored as the author of the first Gospel in the New Testament’s canonical order. Called by Christ while working as a tax collector, he rose and followed Him.

Matthew’s Gospel presents Christ as the fulfillment of the Scriptures. It preserves the Sermon on the Mount, the Beatitudes, and the risen Lord’s commission to make disciples of all nations.

An icon of Saint Matthew recalls the transforming mercy of Christ. His calling shows that a person’s past does not prevent repentance, discipleship, and faithful service to God.
