Saint Bede the Venerable Icon — English Church Father
Saint Bede, also known as the Venerable Bede or Saint Bede of Jarrow (c. 673–735), was an Anglo-Saxon Benedictine monk, theologian, biblical scholar and historian. He is celebrated as the Father of English History and honored by the Catholic Church as a Doctor of the Church.
The icon depicts Bede seated at his writing desk, composing a manuscript with a quill. Behind him, monastic architecture recalls the religious community of Wearmouth–Jarrow in Northumbria, where he spent almost his entire life studying, teaching and writing.
Iconography — Saint Bede at His Writing Desk
Unlike traditional standing icons of saints, this composition portrays Saint Bede engaged in his scholarly and monastic vocation.
Thisicon of Saint Bede the Venerablereproduces a contemporary sacred image painted by British iconographer Aidan Hart for the Pontifical Beda College in Rome.
He sits at a desk with an open manuscript, holding a quill in his hand. The scene emphasizes the importance of sacred learning, the preservation of Christian knowledge and the study of Scripture.
The book bears the Latin motto of the Pontifical Beda College:
Omnes in Christo, unum spectantes, curramus.
The words express the college\'s spiritual ideal of moving forward together in Christ, with a common purpose.
The architectural background recalls the monasteries of Monkwearmouth and Jarrow, two closely connected centers of Anglo-Saxon Christian learning. The buildings serve as a reminder of the monastic environment in which Bede produced his influential writings.
Who Was Saint Bede the Venerable?
Born around 673, Saint Bede entered the monastic community of Wearmouth–Jarrow as a child and devoted his life to prayer, scholarship and teaching.
He studied Scripture, theology, chronology, history and the writings of the Church Fathers. His extensive works helped preserve the religious and intellectual heritage of early medieval England.
His most famous book, Historia Ecclesiastica Gentis Anglorum — Ecclesiastical History of the English People, completed in 731, remains one of the principal historical sources for the Christianization and early history of England.
Bede died at Jarrow on 26 May 735. His remains are now enshrined in Durham Cathedral.
Saint Bede in the Orthodox and Catholic Traditions
Saint Bede lived centuries before the formal separation of the Eastern and Western Churches and belongs to the shared Christian heritage of the first millennium.
He is honored among the Western saints recognized in Orthodox Christianity and is especially revered in the Roman Catholic Church.
In 1899, Pope Leo XIII declared Saint Bede a Doctor of the Church, recognizing his outstanding contribution to Christian theology and learning.
His principal Catholic feast day is 25 May, while Orthodox commemorations commonly observe 27 May, depending on the calendar and local tradition.
Saint Bede is a particularly meaningful patron for historians, scholars, teachers, students and those devoted to the study of Christian history and Scripture.
