Vintage RPPC – Rock Oak Park
Real photo postcard of the Rock Oak Park roadside stop, captioned on the card Rock Oak Park, On Lincoln Highway at foot of Allegheny Mountains. A two-story frame building with a deep columned porch stands at the right, its roof sign lettered ROCK OAK PARK / LUNCHES AND REFRESHMENTS. A long row of gasoline pumps topped with lighted globes runs along the gravel apron in front, with oil drums and a curbside lubester alongside. Brand signage fills the property: a hanging Sinclair H-C Gasoline disc over the drive, a Texaco star Gasoline / Motor Oil sign on a post, Gulf discs at both ends of the lot, a roadside board lettered ROCK OAK PARK above an Esso panel, a smaller Opaline sign at the highway edge, and a Hotel sign further back. Advertising panels set into the porch skirting read AJAX CORD TIRES and MAVIS 10, and rocking chairs and a porch swing sit under the roof. The light-surfaced highway curves away to the left past a line of whitewashed guard posts, with heavy timber closing in on both sides.
Unposted, with no postmark and no correspondence. The back is a divided real photo back with a DOPS stamp box, a paper marking used circa 1925 to 1942. A pencil inventory number, 0100 0001, is written at the top of the back. The Esso brand came into use in 1926, placing the image no earlier than that year, and the pump styles and signage put it circa the late 1920s to 1930s.
A great piece for collectors of Lincoln Highway and roadside Americana postcards, early gas station and petroliana views, or Esso, Gulf, Texaco and Sinclair advertising.
