A SIGNED CDV OFROBERT E. LEE FROM HIS 1869 LAST MEETING WITH GRANT, TAKEN BY MATTHEW BRADY

ROBERT E. LEE(1807-1870). Lee was the most significant Confederate General of the AmericanCivil War.

PS. 2.5” x 3.5”. N.d.[1869-70] N.p. A carte-de-visite signed “RE Lee” below his image. It was taken by famed American portraitphotographer Matthew Brady in 1869 during Lee’s last meeting with Ulysses S.Grant, by this point President of the Unites States. This hour-long meetingbetween the former deadly rivals took place at the White House and was thesubject of much later speculation. The photograph’s backstamp reads “M.B.Brady & Co. National Photographic Portrait Gallery No. 352 Pennsylvania Ave.Washington, D.C”. The carte-de-visite is in fine condition with two minorhorizontal creases along the lower portion, including a diagonal one throughthe autograph. Lee’s pen skipped on the“R” but the remainder of the signature is dark.There is a very small mounting remnant to the lower left of the versothat affects nothing.
