Rare Whitfield Studio Froakes, North Dakota Portrait Photograph c.1905-1915
Description
Offered is an original antique studio portrait photograph featuring a young gentleman dressed in a fashionable dark three-piece suit with vest, patterned necktie, high detachable collar, and pocket square. The portrait is mounted on an attractive embossed presentation card with a decorative oval surround.
The most important feature of this piece is the photographer’s embossed imprint:
“Whitfield Studio – Froakes, N.D.”
Froakes was a very small community in Dickey County, North Dakota, and photographs bearing a Froakes studio imprint are seldom encountered. Surviving images from such small prairie settlements are considerably scarcer than photographs from larger North Dakota cities and hold special appeal for collectors of regional history, genealogy, and early Great Plains photography.
The sitter presents a striking Edwardian-era appearance with neatly parted hair and formal attire typical of the period, making this an excellent example of early twentieth-century American portrait photography.
Whether you collect North Dakota memorabilia, antique photography, genealogical material, or rare photographer imprints, this is a desirable and uncommon survivor from a largely forgotten prairie community.
