This is an exceptionally scarce Pendleton Woolen Mills Chief’s Blanket created exclusively for the Gilcrease Museum in Tulsa, Oklahoma, inspired by a circa-1860 Second Phase Navajo Chief’s Blanket held in the museum’s collection. Produced in a strictly limited edition of just 250 blankets, this example is individually numbered 199 of 250 and retains its original Pendleton and Gilcrease Museum labels. The bold black, ivory, and red striped design beautifully recreates the restrained geometry and visual strength of the historic textile that inspired it, making this a particularly striking example of Pendleton’s museum and heritage collaborations.
Because the commemorative label can be difficult to read in photographs, the text on the label states:
“Chief’s Blanket. Honoring the beauty of Native America, past and present. Inspired by a circa 1860 Second Phase Navajo Chief’s Blanket in the museum’s collection. Limited Edition 199 of 250 for the Gilcrease Museum by Pendleton Woolen Mills.”
That original label is especially important because it directly identifies the historic source textile, the Gilcrease Museum connection, and the blanket’s limited-edition status. Unlike standard-production Pendleton blankets, this was a purpose-made museum edition with a documented production of only 250 examples.
After extensive research, I have been unable to locate another example currently offered for sale or a publicly documented previous sale online, making surviving examples remarkably difficult to find. Based on the Pendleton labeling and construction, this blanket likely dates from the late 1990s to early 2000s. The Gilcrease Museum was contacted regarding the collaboration, but because the edition was produced many years ago, the museum was unable to confirm the exact production date from surviving records.
The blanket remains in very good vintage condition and displays beautifully. Please review all photographs carefully for condition, construction, original labels, and overall appearance. This listing is for the authentic Pendleton limited-edition museum reproduction, not the original 19th-century Navajo textile in the Gilcrease Museum collection.
For a serious Pendleton, Western Americana, museum textile, or historic blanket collector, this is a highly unusual opportunity to acquire a numbered 1-of-250 Pendleton collaboration tied directly to the Gilcrease Museum collection.
