Rare Antique Early Salt-Glazed London Shop Pot, c.1830s–40s — LAWRENCE, OXFORD STREET

Fabulous early salt-glazed English wide-mouth stoneware shop pot/preserves jar from London. Impressed to the front in large serif lettering. Used for preserves, as a shop pot, or possibly for turtle soup.

6 inches high, 4.5 inches across. Glazed-over kiln mark and foreign body to the side. Ultra-faint glaze line inside the bottom of the pot (inside only; see exterior base photograph). Good gloss and good glaze.

I haven’t seen another example.

Historical trade directories, land lease deeds, and Victorian newspaper advertisements show that the trader at 158 Oxford Street during the mid-1800s was William Craig Lawrence, operating as a high-end confectioner and caterer.

Retail Premises: 158 Oxford Street served as his retail shopfront for fine confectionery, pastries, and sweets along the busy St Marylebone stretch of Oxford Street.
