Up for sale is a rare 18th century Delft blue and white figural of a clergyman and congregant. This was purchased from a prominent Washington D.C. estate and has been in my collection for many years and now I\'m posturing for retirement and need to simplify my decor. This humorous figural depicts an adamant clergyman preaching a sermon from a two-tier pulpit with a slightly bored congregant, (see pics). The maker makes this quite evident in its presentation. You can imagine what the congregant is thinking. \"Good grief\" comes to mind. This highly detailed figure is made of tin glazed earthenware. It is painstakingly hand decorated in a plethora of floral and medallion representations. It is a respectable sized piece measuring 11 1/2\" tall, with a base length of 4 3/4\" at furthest points and a base width of approx. 5 3/4\". It has a maker\'s mark on the bottom as shown. I have researched this mark over the years to try to identify the maker, with no luck. In fact, I have never found anything even similar to this piece. The figural is in very good overall condition, with possible old restoration to the clergyman\'s hands, as they have an ever-so-slight color variation. A charming and scarce example indeed and will be a great addition to your early Delft collection. Please check my other sales for nice antiques, collectibles and such.
