Rare Jewish Calendar / Luach for the Hebrew Year 5620 (תר״ך)
Breslau, 1859–1860 — Printed by Hirsch Sulzbach

A scarce and attractive 19th-century Jewish pocket calendar, printed in Breslau — today Wrocław, Poland — by the Hebrew printer Hirsch Sulzbach.

The illustrated title page is surrounded by decorative borders and depictions of the twelve signs of the Zodiac. The German heading identifies the calendar as being for 5620, from September 29, 1859 through September 16, 1860.

The calendar includes extensive practical information for Jewish religious life throughout the year: Jewish holidays and fast days, Rosh Chodesh, moladot and tekufot, haftarot, Pirkei Avos, Hoshanos, astronomical information, times relating to Shabbos and Yom Tov, the final time for eating chametz before Pesach, and other calendrical information.

An especially unusual feature of this copy is that it is interleaved with original blank leaves. A blank page was inserted between the printed calendar leaves, apparently so the owner could write appointments, reminders, accounts, or other notes alongside the calendar. The sale catalogue specifically describes these blank leaves as original to the volume.

Following the calendar is a detailed list of annual fairs and markets held in East and West Prussia, Posen, and Silesia. This commercial information gives the volume additional importance as a document of everyday Jewish business and travel life in mid-19th-century Central Europe.

At the end is a decorative German advertisement for the Hirsch Sulzbach printing and publishing establishment in Breslau.

A particularly appealing survival of German-Jewish religious, commercial, and everyday life in 1860, combining an illustrated Hebrew calendar, astronomical and halachic information, commercial fair listings, and its unusual original interleaved format.
