This is an unusual group of original 19th-century handwritten documents and correspondence, primarily dating from the 1860s–1870s, with material connected to California banking, railroads, business, property transactions, military affairs and personal correspondence.
The documents were recovered together during the clearing of the historic Colburn House in Plymouth, California, and have been carefully kept together as one collection.
This is not a reproduction or modern facsimile collection. These are original historical papers.
⭐ NOTABLE MATERIAL IN THE COLLECTION
The archive includes documents and correspondence referencing or involving:
• Bank of California
• Oregon & California Railroad
• Railroad securities and financial transactions
• California banking and business affairs
• San Francisco and Sacramento correspondence
• California property/business transactions
• Hawaii/California correspondence
• Department of California military correspondence
• 19th-century contracts and agreements
• Personal correspondence
Among the material are handwritten documents from approximately 1870, including financial correspondence involving railroad receipts and bondholders, Bank of California-related material, business agreements, and other original correspondence.
The collection also includes an 1867 printed London & San Francisco Bank publication concerning the organization of the bank’s San Francisco establishment.
🏛️ THE COLBURN HOUSE CONNECTION
The papers were recovered together from the historic Colburn House in Plymouth, California, a documented historic property with a long history of California business and community activity.
The building itself dates to the 19th century and later became associated with the Colburn family and Plymouth’s business history.
Important provenance statement: I am not claiming that every document in this collection was originally created or owned by the Colburn family. The complete chain of ownership before the documents were discovered at the property has not been established. The listing accurately describes the known physical provenance: the documents were recovered together from the historic property during a cleanout.
That distinction is important, and it is why this collection is being offered as a historical document archive with research potential, rather than making unsupported claims about individual ownership.
🔎 A RESEARCHER’S DREAM
The real appeal of this collection may be what hasn’t been discovered yet.
The documents contain names, dates, places, companies, financial transactions, railroad references, signatures and correspondence that may allow a researcher to connect the individual pieces and reconstruct portions of their history.
Some documents are extremely legible; others contain faded or difficult 19th-century handwriting. There are also markings and writing on some pages that may warrant further examination.
📦 ONE COMPLETE LOT
The entire group pictured is being offered together as ONE LOT.
I have intentionally kept the documents together rather than separating them. The goal is to preserve the collection’s physical provenance and give the next owner the opportunity to conduct further research.
