Post WW1 to WW2 Royal Hungarian Naval Dagger Kriegsmarine KuK Kingdom of Hungary For Sale

This is an Austro-Hungarian Empire style dagger used by theKingdom of Hungary following the breakup of Austria-Hungary.

When Austria-Hungary collapsed, a substantial part of theK.u.K. Danube Flotilla was actually in Hungary. Hungary therefore temporarilyfound itself with a considerable number of former Austro-Hungarian riverwarships. One account gives eight armored gunboats, eight armored patrol boatsand about 55 smaller vessels, with roughly 1,000 personnel.

In April 1919, the Hungarian government formally establisheda Naval Force under the Ministry of Defense, primarily for Danube patrolduties.

The former Austro-Hungarian Adriatic fleet was not inheritedby the Kingdom of Hungary as a functioning national navy. It was dispersedamong the successor states and Allied powers. By 1921, the British Parliamentwas explicitly describing the Austro-Hungarian Navy as no longer existing.

The Kingdom of Hungary under the regency of Governor Horthycontinued to maintain a militarily capable Danube force, but the Treaty ofTrianon imposed restrictions on it. Hungary was prohibited from maintainingmilitary river forces, while it was permitted a small number of vessels forriver-policing purposes. The Hungarian military authorities consequentlyreorganized the force on 1 March 1921 as the Royal Hungarian River Guard,formally under the Interior Ministry. Officially, therefore, it was ariver-police organization, not a navy. In reality, however, it retained adistinctly military character. Its vessels were armed, its personnel receivedmilitary training, and the organization was effectively connected to theHungarian armed forces.

By the later 1920s and 1930s, this developed into what waseffectively a small Hungarian riverine military force, eventually becoming theRoyal Hungarian Army River Forces in 1939.

The Royal Hungarian Army River Forces were Hungary’s smallmilitary river force during World War II. Operating mainly on the Danube andTisza, they carried out river patrols, mine-laying and minesweeping, convoyescort, reconnaissance, troop and supply transport, and artillery andanti-aircraft support.

They saw their first major wartime action during the 1941invasion of Yugoslavia, advancing along the Danube and Sava and conductingmine-clearance and river-security operations. From 1941 to 1942 they also tookpart in anti-partisan and security operations in occupied Yugoslavia.

Their most intensive activity came in 1944–45, when theysupported Hungarian and German forces during the Soviet advance. They escortedand evacuated troops, cleared mines, provided gunfire and anti-aircraftsupport, and protected river crossings and convoys. As Hungary collapsed, thesurviving vessels retreated up the Danube, eventually reaching Austria andGermany, where the force surrendered in May 1945.

In short, they functioned essentially as a small river navy,specializing in river warfare, mine warfare, transport, patrol and supportoperations rather than conventional naval combat.
