We are looking almost directly north from the seeburg, with high mountains behind. To Munich is 70 miles away straight ahead. Beyond that granite mountain wall — Lake Constance and the Swiss Frontier are about 45 miles away. At our left lies Vienna and Budapest and Kronstadt, then farther and farther away the pass, and behind 300 miles distant, Venice lies sleeping by the shores of the Adriatic. The little brook which gives the town its name is the Inn — along whose narrow valley, at the foot of the mountains the city is built and through which runs the railway track toward and through the Silvretta town. Innsbruck has 40,000 people and no large modern industries, but its romantic beauty is unique in all Europe.
The site long ago was earth known to the enterprising Romans and its fertile fields were cultivated before the nineteenth century. The people of Tyrol are proud and fond of their native land, born in a small land hemmed in by mountains and rocks, they are lovers of independence. Their history is full of heroism and in 1809, when Napoleon’s allies conquered them, they would not take the yoke. We see now the old old town below but the brave band came to grief later.
“At Mantua in chains the gallant Hofer lay,
From Mantua to death they led him straight away.”
If the boundaries set by nature decided political boundaries that majestic limestone wall rising between here and Bavaria would have settled the question of independence.
