Original WW2 USAAF Combat Camera Unit Photo - M1 Carbines & PH-47 Press Camera

Up for sale is an exceptional, premium-grade authentic World War 2 original period photograph capturing a seven-man U.S. Army Air Forces (USAAF) Combat Camera squad posed on a weathered stone staircase in the European Theater of Operations (ETO). This is a rarely seen, highly detailed group portrait that offers fantastic reference material for military, aviation, and photographic history collectors.

Key Historical Details Visible in the Image:

• Personnel & Insignia: The squad is led by a 1st Lieutenant positioned in the center, flanked by NCOs including a Technician 4th Grade (T/4) and a Sergeant. Clear USAAF shoulder sleeve insignia (the classic winged star emblem) are visible on the uniforms.
• Weapons & Equipment Display: Laid out symmetrically at the feet of the soldiers are six M1 Carbines with empty magazine wells (no magazines inserted). The carbines feature distinct early-to-mid-war configurations, including thin barrel bands without bayonet lugs. Six clean M1 steel helmets line the front row.

• Camera Gear: The center of the photo features a heavy-duty tripod holding a standard-issue PH-47 Combat Camera setup (based on the 4x5 Speed Graphic press camera) along with four large, polished flash bulb reflectors laid out on the ground.
• Architectural Setting: The aged, semi-circular stone steps and classical stone door moldings indicate this photo was taken at a requisitioned European estate, country manor, or château used as a tactical base or photographic processing headquarters.

Physical Characteristics & Condition:

• Dimensions: Measures approximately 4-3/4 inches by 3-11/16 inches. This unique aspect ratio is consistent with a period contact print trimmed down from a 4x5 field negative.
• Material/Backing: The reverse side features a distinct, period-correct semigloss look and texture, indicative of the specialized water-resistant photographic papers manufactured for military field darkrooms to withstand chemical washes and damp operational environments.
• Condition: Excellent vintage condition with sharp contrast, clear details, and normal age-appropriate handling wear.
