This unposted c.1913 Curt Teich color postcard shows New Orleans’ historic French Market in Louisiana, with produce stalls, fruit vendors, horse-drawn wagons, street tracks, market buildings, and a bakery sign. A collectible piece of vintage ephemera for those interested in New Orleans history, Louisiana postcards, Curt Teich views, historic markets, early transportation, and antique city scenes.
Rooted in New Orleans’ colonial food trade, the French Market developed into an important gathering place for buying, selling, and daily neighborhood life. The surviving Meat Market building dates to 1813, while the Vegetable Market developed between 1822 and 1830. This historic postcard preserves the working character of the market before later modernization, including the stalls, deliveries, horse-drawn transport, and small businesses that helped supply New Orleans kitchens.
The view predates the major French Market modernization project begun in 1936. Horse wagons and tracks running past the vendors add strong visual interest for collectors of vintage transportation, street scenes, historic storefronts, and early 20th-century New Orleans. The combination of market activity, architecture, and local commerce makes this an appealing Louisiana postcard and antique city view.
Marked C.T. American Art and numbered R-33976, the card was produced by Curt Teich & Co. of Chicago, a major American postcard publisher. Its original production dates to approximately 1913.
