MID 19TH CENTURY RED HOUSE, MOTIF & VERSE SAMPLER BY JANE AIREY AGED 9 - 1850 For Sale

Mid 19th century sampler by Jane Airey aged 9 - 1850. Worked in wool on gauze, this sampler is just delightful with neat stitch work throughout, the moreso when one considers Jane was just nine years old when she completed it. The upper section of the gauze is stitched with a central fruit basket with a floral motif and cherub hovering to either side, whilst the middle contains the following somewhat sombre verse when one considers how young Jane was

The lower section of the gauze is stitched with a charming two storey red house with Jane\'s details and the date of 1850 above its roof and a flower basket to the left and right of its walls, both with a fruit basket above. The wholepiece is then surrounded by a deep arcaded floral border.
The gauze has overall discolouration consistent with its age with some patches of staining down the right side and by the fruit basket in the upper section. The sampler is behind glass so I\'m not able to see the reverse, but the colours of the wool appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. There is also a small amount of stitch loss to the line above Jane\'s details. Thesampler is contained within its seemingly original substantial mahogany frame with gilt slip, the latter retaining much of its original gilding. The frame is in good condition with scratches and scuff mark commensurate with its age. There is also minor separation to the lower right mitre but it is stable. THERE IS ALSO A NAIL SHARD PROTRUDING SLIGHTLY ON THE TOP EDGE OF THE BACK OF THE FRAME WHICH I WAS NOT ABLE TO REMOVE. AS SUCH, I HAVE COVERED OVER WITH SEVERAL LAYERS OF TAPE AS IT IS QUITE SHARP.
Measures - This is a fairly large piece measuring 14 1/2\" across x 14 3/4\" (sight size) and 19 1/2\" x 19 3/4\" including the frame.
I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO MENTION THAT I HAVE USED A RELATIVELY NEW CAMERA TO TAKE THESE PHOTOGRAPHS AND I AM STRUGGLING WITH THE COLOUR BALANCE (something I\'m STILL continuing to work on!!) AS SUCH, SOME OF MY PHOTOS APPEAR SOMEWHAT DARK OR HAVE A SLIGHTLY FIERY OR YELLOWISH LOOK TO THEM WHICH IS NOT THE CASE, IT\'S JUST MY INCOMPETENCE!
