MEDIEVAL INDONISIAN JAVA MAJAPAHIT - TERRACOTTA ALIENHEAD
STATUE 13th-14th A.D.
A charming statuette of aof Alienhead, extremely rare example, virtually every head was broke from the body when made as an offering. This is an excavated example number 281. It has highly unusual features that look alien in origin. Originates from Majapahit Empire, region of Trowulan, Eastern Java, Indonesia, 13th-14th century.

Majahapit: Majapahit was the largest empire ever to form in Southeast Asia. As temporary with the Yuan and Early Ming Dynasties, the Majapahit Empire became a dominant world power in the 13th.-15th. century unders ruler like Hayam Wuruk. Majapahit was an empire of 98 tributaries, stretching from Sumatra to New Guinea;consisting of present-day Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Brunei, southern Thailand, East Timor, Sulu Archipelago and other parts of the Philippines.

Its an impressive statement piece that will fit well into any Museum collection or displayed privately, a luxury medieval item that is guaranteed to delight.
Terracotta items of this type have been found extensively around the site of Trowulan, East Javaand would have been an offering, the heads always broken from the body.
The Majapahit Empire was a powerful and wealthy maritime Empire based in Eastern Java that flourished during the 13th-16th centuries. Controlling most of the trade routes through the Strait of Malacca and the Java Sea.

Provenance:Property of a London collector 1960, then by sale 2014, then Lancashire collection to present.
Although it has been excavated it is in excellent condition.
This would have been found around the site of Trowulan, East Java, (some examples carved from stone). This particular statue still has the archaeological excavation numbers on the rear of the base (281).
