Offered is a striking large Illinois \"Marcasite Dollar\"from an old family fossil collection assembled during the 1950s–1960s.

These remarkable fossils have been prized by collectors for generations.Traditionally known as marcasite dollars (though the metallicreplacement mineral is generally believed to be pyrite), they preserve thedistinctive five-petaled pattern of an ancient echinoid and date to the MississippianPeriod, approximately 330 million years ago, when Illinois lay beneatha warm tropical sea.

This specimen comes from one of the classic Midwestern collecting regionsfor these iconic fossils and has remained in the same family collection formore than half a century. This item was collected in Illinois by members of our family during the 1950s–1960sand carefully preserved ever since.
