Up for sale is a magnificent, highly detailed matched pair of vintage mid-century Chinese Shiwan (Shekwan) glazed pottery celestial guardian figures. Standing at an impressive 15 ¼ inches tall, this substantial pair represents the cosmic balance of the Sun and the Moon.The figure on the left represents the Sun Deity, distinguished by the Chinese character for Sun (日) on his headdress disc, holding a ritual ingot while riding a mythological tiger. The figure on the right represents the Moon Deity, marked with the character for Moon (月) on his headdress, holding a sword while riding a celestial dragon/qilin.Both figures feature the classic, highly expressive unglazed "mudman" faces and hands contrasted against vibrant, thick-flowing high-fired glossy blue, green, and amber glazes over detailed armor.Dimensions (Each Figure):
