DESCRIPTION
Beautiful hand-painted Kholui Russian lacquer miniature box titled “Oleg the Prophet,” identified as the work of artist Kurakina.

The box measures approximately 5.5\" x 4\" x 1.25\" tall and features a detailed narrative composition inspired by Oleg the Prophet, the legendary early ruler associated with Kievan Rus and an enduring subject in Russian history, folklore, literature, and decorative art.

Kholui lacquer miniature painting is distinguished by its detailed narrative compositions, vivid coloration, fine brushwork, and use of decorative gold elements. The tradition developed from the area\'s earlier icon-painting heritage and became one of Russia\'s recognized centers of lacquer miniature art.

Traditional Kholui boxes are typically constructed from papier-mâché with black lacquer exteriors, red lacquer interiors, and detailed tempera miniature painting. Artist, village, and title inscriptions are commonly incorporated into authentic signed works.

This example is a particularly attractive size for display, with a broad painted surface allowing the historical scene to be presented in considerable detail.

The box remains in overall good condition, showing only light marks from previous use and storage with no notable structural damage observed.
