His food, proud science never taught to cook—
Hard of digestion as a lawyer’s book—
Has brought dyspepsia on the wretched Red,
Till now he almost wishes he were dead.
He wanders sadly far beyond the lines,
And to the pale-face fort his trail inclines.
With leaden eye, and hollow, wasted cheeks,
’Tis not for food the dusky savage seeks,
Nor yet for blood; but something to restore
The vigorous appetite he had before.
The pale-face Captain’s heart compassion thrills;
