The Douglas DC-4 is an early American, four piston engine propeller airliner. Military versions were the United States Army Air Force C-54 and the United States Navy R5D. The model had its first flight on 14 February 1942. It was introduced into service in 1942 with United Airlines. There were 80 models of the DC-4 manufactured and 1,163 models of the C-54 and R5D manufactured between 1942-1947.
Trans World Airlines (TWA) was a major airline in the United States and was founded on 16 July 1930, as Transcontinental and Western Air. The famed aviator Howard Hughes acquired control of TWA in 1939. The airline ceased operations on 01 December 2001, when it was merged with American Airlines. TWA had 168 aircraft in service at the time of the merger, with the majority of them changing to the American Airlines livery.
TWA's historical fleet had fourteen Douglas DC-4's that saw service from 1946 to 1961. Most of TWA's DC-4's were phased out in the mid-1950's in favor of the larger, faster Douglas DC-6.
This particular model (N45346) was originally manufactured as a military Douglas C-54-E-15-DO with registration 44-9124 and delivered to the United States Army Air Force on 14 May 1945. The aircraft was used as a transport during World War Two. After the war, it went through a few owners before being purchased by TWA on 17 May 1950 and nicknamed "The Acropolis". N45346 went through four more owners ending up with finance company Walter E. Heller Co. in May of 1966. N45646 was ultimately scrapped (how very sad).
