BACKGROUND: Some U.S. soldiers, notably the Harlem Hellfighters (369th Infantry Regiment), wore French uniforms and equipment during WWI due to segregation in the U.S. Army and their service under French command. While most U.S. troops wore American-made olive drab uniforms in a British style, specific units like the Harlem Hellfighters were provided with French gear because they were assigned to French armies.
