Francis Scott Key Bridge Response Challenge Coin

This bronze challenge coin was designed by Coast Guardsmen during the Francis Scott Key Bridge response to commemorate the unified effort of federal, state, and private partners in one of Maryland’s most significant emergency operations.

The obverse side proudly depicts the Francis Scott Key Bridge spanning the Patapsco River, symbolizing the resilience and unity of Maryland’s maritime community. Above the bridge, a waving Maryland state flag ripples in the wind, representing the enduring spirit and pride of the Free State. The intricate detailing captures both the architectural grace of the bridge and the motion of the flag, standing as a tribute to the lives affected and the responders who answered the call.

The reverse side features the emblems of the Unified Command — the collective organizations that led and supported the response effort. Prominently displayed are the insignias of the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG), Maryland State Police (MSP), U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Maryland Transportation Authority Police (MTAPD), Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE/PD), and Witt O’Brien/Ambipar. Each emblem signifies the unique capabilities and dedication these agencies brought to the mission, united under one command and one purpose: to protect life, restore the waterway, and rebuild the bridge’s legacy.

The coin’s bronze composition reflects strength, endurance, and honor — timeless qualities mirrored in the responders it commemorates. Created at the very time of the response, this coin serves as a tangible reminder of teamwork, sacrifice, and the unwavering resolve of all who stood the watch during the Francis Scott Key Bridge incident.
