Extra Large Philippine Tektite – 212 grams Philippinite, Meteorite Impact Glass, Bikolite, Rizalite
Bicol Province, Philippines
PhilippineTektites, known as Philippinites, or Bicolites, which are found in the Provinceof Bicol, are rarely over 100 grams in weight. In fact, in the past 8 yearsless than 10 Bicolites a year are found which weigh over 100 grams, making thepresent specimen, at 212 grams, extremely rare.
Mostspecimens over 100 grams are quite plain, no grooves and very little character– but the specimen being offered here is the rare exception to the rule. Notonly is it a big one, it’s full of character and aesthetics. With deep and well-definedcontraction grooves, it also displays a finely rugged, almost glitteringdappled surface with a few bubble marks as an added bonus.
Thispast trip to the Philippines I did not come back with a single specimen over100 grams for two reasons: There were very few on the market, and the few thatI saw were way over-priced in my opinion. So grab this one while you can; AnImpressive specimen for its size and character.
Tektites, fromthe Greek tektos, occurs when an asteroid impacts the Earth and causes terrestrialrocks to liquefy as they are splashed into the upper atmosphere and returnsto Earth as solidified glass.
A tektite’sshape is aerodynamically determined by its degree of orientation as it fallsback to Earth. As it cools, the molten rock contracts which forms contractiongrooves and gas bubbles that leave attractive patterns as the tektitehardens. Both virtuesare visible on this current specimen.
