For sale is a fascinating collector's lot of four antique pocket watch winding keys dating from the late Victorian era, circa 1880–1895. This historic group includes a highly collectible regional English advertising key, a decorative open-work key, a classic swivel loop key, and a later utility crank key.The highlight of this collection is the stamped brass advertising fob key. One side is beautifully embossed with "WATCHMAKER & JEWELLER" while the reverse explicitly reads "JOHN MASON • ROTHERHAM". John Mason was a highly prominent master clockmaker and jeweler located on High Street in South Yorkshire who served as the Mayor of Rotherham from 1888 to 1889.
This key serves as a wonderful piece of English horological and civic history.
The remaining keys include a beautiful open-work decorative clover design, a traditional smooth-ring swivel fob key, and a later nickel-plated utility bench or pocket key with a textured grip.Measurements:
• Total Length (Average): The keys range from approximately 1.38 inches to 1.57 inches long (3.5 cm to 4.0 cm).
• Width: The widest loops measure around 0.59 inches to 0.79 inches (1.5 cm to 2.0 cm). These items are in authentic, as-found vintage condition with a natural aged patina.
The John Mason key features heavy surface oxidation and a distinct blue/crusty patina that collectors love, leaving the text highly legible. The clover key shows a small historic chip at the very edge of its steel winding pipe. Please review the high-resolution photos for exact scale and cosmetic condition before offerding.
