A fantastic surviving piece of early American cookstove history — and considerably more interesting than the giant trivet it first appears to be.

This heavy iron piece is an antique extension / warming shelf made for a Monarch Malleable cook stove or range by the Malleable Iron Range Co. of Beaver Dam, Wisconsin. Bold openwork lettering spells “MALLEABLE” across the center, surrounded by a geometric lattice design.

The identification is supported by period Monarch literature describing a “Malleable Extension Shelf to top” measuring approximately 7 1/2" x 19". This example measures approximately 19 1/2" x 7", with projecting mounting tabs along one side where the shelf originally attached to the range.

These shelves extended the working surface of the stove and could be used for holding cookware, serving pieces, or items removed from the hot cooktop. Removed from the range, it also makes a fantastic piece of antique kitchen or industrial decor.

Condition:

Good antique condition with expected oxidation, surface rust, discoloration and aged patina from many decades of use and storage. Mounting hardware/brackets that originally connected the shelf to the stove are not present. The integral mounting tabs remain. No obvious major cracks or repairs noted. Please review all photos closely as they are part of the description.

Turns out “MALLEABLE” wasn’t this absolute iron unit trying to convince us it was flexible — it was telling us exactly where it came from.
