Wonderful and unusual probable antique miniature portrait frame with an ornate gilt metal finish and two fascinating old photographs.
The frame measures approximately 2 &1/2 inches tall by 1& 3/4 inches wide and weighs only 21 grams (approximately 0.8 oz). The decorative frame is non-magnetic and has the appearance of gilt brass, although the metal composition has not been professionally tested.
The photograph displayed in the frame is an wonderfully haunting old portrait of a young girl — a true “creepy girl” image with tremendous Victorian Gothic character with a small hole in the head for a previous necklace possibly. The hole definitely adds to the creepy girl appearance.
Even more interesting, when the frame was opened, a second much older-looking portrait of a woman was discovered concealed behind the girl\'s photograph. This portrait is printed on very thin, smooth photographic paper and shows noticeable age-related yellow staining around the perimeter, suggesting it has been housed inside the frame for a very long time. It may have been an earlier
or possibly original photograph for the frame, although its history cannot be confirmed.
Both old photographs will remain with the frame and are included in the sale.
The back retains its easel-style stand which is magnetic and an amber-colored backing piece that was positioned behind the photographs. The easel/stand hardware contains the magnetic component; the ornate decorative frame itself is non-magnetic.
The frame shows age-appropriate wear, patina and surface variation to the gilt finish. The photographs also show age, discoloration and wear consistent with old photographic material.
A particularly charming and mysterious little antique, perfect for a collection of miniature frames, Victorian photography, antique portraiture, Gothic decor, oddities or curiosities.
